The project comes as similar facilities have been proposed throughout the region.

A new freestanding emergency room has been proposed in DeLand.

Miami-based Southpointe Commons Group LLC proposed a 10,860-square-foot free-standing emergency room on 1.59 acres at 2490 S. Woodland Blvd. The application with the city of DeLand does not list what health system may use the site.

The site currently features a retail building that once featured a Walgreens and a Checker's restaurant. A contact for the company could not be immediately found online.

AdventHealth DeLand — with 158 beds — is the largest hospital in the city.

The new ER comes as these facilities have been on the rise in Central Florida.

Matthew Weinberger, vice president of health care and office brokerage services for Central and North Florida with Lee & Associates Central Florida, previously told Orlando Business Journal the growth in freestanding ERs over the past few years is due to population growth and increased demand for health care services. It's a trend he doesn't expect to slow anytime soon.

He added that building freestanding ERs can serve as "planting a flag" in a region where health systems may not have a presence yet or want to expand more. "That's an indicator of a long-term plan for an area."
